"May we?" said the rabbit, the cat, the dog, the pig, the sheep, the chickens, the calf and the goat. 3 A( R8 p- X3 p$ c

And they all piled in.

大家一起爬上车子。

“It's a lovely day,” said Mr Gumpy. "Let's take the old cart-track across the fields."

For a while they drove along happily. The sun shone, the engine chugged and everyone was enjoying the ride. % r$ q( Y6 O9 X V( b. f4 {5 w8 r+ P

大家坐在车上，高高兴兴地走了一阵。阳光明媚。车子咔啦咔啦地走着。大家玩得很开心。 9 \& X( A7 @) p; \

Very soon the dark clouds were right overhead.

5 t* f s( Q* h" X( iMr Gumpy stopped the car. He jumped out, put up the hood, and down came the rain.
) S* G3 f% W5 F5 k' t% p1 p+ H2 ~" @

甘伯伯停了车，跳到车外，把车篷架好，雨跟着就下起来了。 5 P- u4 m7 c, k" Z
3 ?# S' q/ Y0 G5 S# K& e: ?The road grew muddier, and muddier, and the wheels began to spin.

"Some of you will have to get out and push," he said.

路上的烂泥越来越多，车轮一圈一圈地空转着，车走不动了。

甘伯伯看着前面的小山，对大家说：“看样子你们当中要有几个下去推车才行。”

“Not me,”said the calf. "I'm too young."

“Not us，”said the chickens.“We can't push.”

“Not me,”said the sheep. "I might catch cold."

"Now we're really stuck," said Mr Gumpy. 3 B$ Z: @2 M1 A L2 y9 a1 i6 p4 _

They all got out and pushed.

/ q+ U! F! L l汽车陷进烂泥里，动都不能动。 % Y0 l- d6 v9 d% K

甘伯伯说：“我们抛锚了。”

They pushed and shoved and heaved and strained and gasped and shipped and slithered and squelched.

Slowly the car began to move... ' H! D! Q" E; r8 e: k5 M

"Don't stop." cried Mr Gumpy. "Keep it up! We're nearly there." 9 C* {' ]' Q# G$ s

8 k5 j2 W0 T. j; Z% c$ p; l大家推啊，顶啊，抬啊，抗啊，喘大气的喘大气，打滑的打滑，东倒西歪，呼哧呼哧地踩着烂泥。

" n$ r1 m$ Z) b# Q2 E, n6 j7 I好不容易，汽车向前挪了一步。

大家用尽全力一推，车轮爬上了硬地。

8 O6 K% t& m, j" T8 iThe car edged its way to the top of the hill. ; W1 [% L0 ^3 P
7 h+ W& B9 Q' H8 k' w3 ]& l5 WThey looked up and saw that the sun was shining.

汽车艰难地爬到了小山的山顶。

“Goodbye,” said Mr Gumpy.
