Mr Gumpy's Motor Car

Mr Gumpy was going for a ride in his car.

甘伯伯打算开车去兜风！

He drove out of the gate and down the lane.

他把车开出院门，开上小路。

“May we come too?” said the children.

- \  e# r2 L# G+ h4 X6 e% Y

小孩儿说：“我们可以跟你一起去吗？”

" Z& G0 |, Y! o  J6 w0 M+ y) x! D0 z

"May we?" said the rabbit, the cat, the dog, the pig, the sheep, the chickens,   the calf and the goat.

兔子，猫，狗狗，胖猪，绵羊，鸡，小牛和山羊，也都说：“我们可以一起去”

" All right," said Mr Gumpy.

"But it wil be a squash."

甘伯伯说：“都上来吧，只要你们不怕把自己挤扁。”

And they all piled in.

大家一起爬上车子。

“It's a lovely day,” said Mr Gumpy. "Let's take the old cart-track across the fields."

甘伯伯说：“今天天气不错。我们就从这条古老的土路，直接穿过前面那一片田野好了。”

For a while they drove along happily. The sun shone, the engine chugged and everyone was enjoying the ride.

大家坐在车上，高高兴兴地走了一阵。阳光明媚。车子咔啦咔啦地走着。大家玩得很开心。

“I don't like the look of rhose clouds. I think it's going to rain,” said Mr Gumpy.

甘伯伯说：“天上那些乌云，开启了怪怪的，我想是要下雨了。”

Very soon the dark clouds were right overhead.

Mr Gumpy stopped the car. He jumped out, put up the hood, and down came the rain.

哪些乌云很快就来到头顶上。

甘伯伯停了车，跳到车外，把车篷架好，雨跟着就下起来了。

The road grew muddier, and muddier, and the wheels began to spin.

Mr Gumpy looked at the hill ahead.

"Some of you will have to get out and push," he said.

路上的烂泥越来越多，车轮一圈一圈地空转着，车走不动了。

* V, J2 P% e) O$ J' u* X8 y

甘伯伯看着前面的小山，对大家说：“看样子你们当中要有几个下去推车才行。”

“Not me,”said the goat. “I'm too old.”

( ?$ v* T% c" Q* G

“Not me,”said the calf. "I'm too young."

! _8 B. z' S; t( \+ x, b

“Not us，”said the chickens.“We can't push.”

5 ~. h+ e  L, L4 s+ }# ^

“Not me,”said the sheep. "I might catch cold."

“Not me,”said the pig. "I've a bone in my trotter."

“Not me,”said the dog.  "But I'll drive if you like."

“Not me,”said the cat. "It would ruin my fur."

“Not me,”said the rabbit. "I'm not very well."

“Not me,”said the girl. "He's stronger."

“Not me,”said the boy. "She's bigger."

山羊说：“我不行，我太老。”

小牛说：“我不行，我太年轻。”

鸡说：“我们不行，我们不会推。”

绵羊说：“我不行，我会感冒。”

猪说：“我不行，我的脚上有骨刺。”

狗说：“我不行，不过只要你愿意，我倒是可以帮你发动车子。”

猫说：“我不行，会把我的毛弄脏。”

兔子说：“我不行，我的身体不太舒服。”

女孩儿说：“我不行，男孩比较有力气。”

男孩儿说：“我不行，她长的比我高。”

The wheels churned...

车轮一转，泥浆就溅的到处都是。。。

+ Z/ u/ @9 F1 O  T' T2 {) V- }

The car sank deeper into the mud.

! b, U- Y2 D- G" f4 K! r* [

"Now we're really stuck," said Mr Gumpy.

& M  E. J  b) j- e- I

They all got out and pushed.

! I' N2 P* r+ o) e0 D

汽车陷进烂泥里，动都不能动。

" ?+ c4 R. v; d8 P% m3 B7 y" E# A
! s; ?% Q( W( K4 E8 p

甘伯伯说：“我们抛锚了。”

$ S% S3 i" P# S2 f3 M2 d3 x

大家只好全部下去推车了。

) d/ b7 \7 W* E, }7 w9 q1 A. I

! a; N/ k. a7 T+ Q* f! x1 @+ z0 m

They pushed and shoved and heaved and strained and gasped and shipped and slithered and squelched.

Slowly the car began to move...

"Don't stop." cried Mr Gumpy. "Keep it up! We're nearly there."

Everyone gave a mighty heave the tyres gripped...

大家推啊，顶啊，抬啊，抗啊，喘大气的喘大气，打滑的打滑，东倒西歪，呼哧呼哧地踩着烂泥。

好不容易，汽车向前挪了一步。

甘伯伯大叫：“别放松！再往前推，我们快成功了。”

大家用尽全力一推，车轮爬上了硬地。

The car edged its way to the top of the hill.

They looked up and saw that the sun was shining.

汽车艰难地爬到了小山的山顶。

大家抬头一看，天上又出现太阳了。

"We'll drive home across the bridge," said Mr Gumpy.

"There'll be time for a swim."

甘伯伯说：“过了桥就到家了，大家可以好好洗个澡。”

“Goodbye,” said Mr Gumpy.

"Come for a drive another day."

甘伯伯对大家说：“再见，再见，想坐汽车，下次再来！”
