It was spring vacation.
Mother and Father were away.
The baby-sitter was sweeping the porch.
Violet was in the yard picking dandelions.
Arthur was lying on the grass.
"Come look at this bug," said Violet.
"It looks like a twig."
一个春假。
母亲和父亲不在。
保姆正在扫门廊。
维奥莱特在院子里摘蒲公英。
亚瑟躺在草地上。
“来看看这只虫子，” 维奥莱特说。
“它看起来像一根树枝。”
"It's a walkingstick," said Arthur.
"We studied them in science."
Arthur yawned and rolled over.
"I wish I had something to do."
"I will tell you what you can do," called the baby-sitter.
"You can clean up the yard."
"That's nothing to do," said Arthur.
"Yes, it is," said the baby-sitter.
"You can pick up all the broken branches and twigs."
“这是一只竹节虫，”亚瑟说。
“我们在科学课研究过它们。”
亚瑟打呵欠转过身来。
“我希望我有事可做。”
“我会告诉你你能做什么，”保姆说。
“你可以打扫院子。”
“这没什么可做的，”亚瑟说。
“是的，是的，”保姆说。

"But not my walkingstick twig," said Violet.
"He will not know the difference," said Arthur.
"He might," said Violet.
"No, he won't," said Arthur.
"You never studied science.
So you don't know."

"Yes, I did," said Violet.
"My teacher put some cocoons in glass jars.
After a while, moths came out."
"That's baby science," said Arthur.
"I mean real science, like going on field trips and collecting specimens."
"How about collecting some trash specimens," said the baby-sitter.
She gave Arthur a big trash bag.
"Phooey," said Arthur.
"Why can't I do something fun?"
“是的，我学过，”维奥莱特说。
“我的老师把一些茧放在玻璃罐里。
过了一会儿，蛾子出来了。
“这是婴儿科学，”亚瑟说。

Arthur started to clean up the yard.
He picked up branches and twigs.
He picked up an old gum wrapper.
He picked up a Cracker Jack box.
Inside the box was a big black ant.
It was carrying a piece of Cracker Jack.
"Look, Violet," said Arthur.
"Here is a worker ant—just like we studied in science."
亚瑟开始清理院子。
他拿起树枝和树枝。
他拿起一个旧口香糖包装纸。

盒子里面是一只大黑蚂蚁。

Violet looked at the ant.
"I thought you studied specimens," she said.
"An ant is a specimen," said Arthur.
"Our class goes on field trips to collect them.
Oh boy! I just got a great idea.
I am going to do something fun.
I'm going to go on a field trip."
维奥莱特看着蚂蚁。
“我以为你研究过标本，”她说。
“一只蚂蚁是一个标本，”亚瑟说。
“我们班正在实地考察中收集。
好家伙！ 我有一个好主意。
我会去做一些有趣的事情。

"Can I come too?" asked Violet.
"No," said Arthur.
"I want to collect frogs
and worms and snakes—slimy things that you would not like."
"A girl in my class brought in a snake she caught," said Violet.
"It wasn't a bit slimy.
I held it in my hand."
"You did?" asked Arthur.
"Yes," said Violet.
“我也能来吗？”维奥莱特问道。
“不，”亚瑟说。
“我想收集青蛙。
还有你不喜欢的虫子和蛇。
“我班上的一个女孩带来了一条她抓到的蛇，”维奥莱特说。
“一点也不粘。
我把它握在手里。
“是吗？”亚瑟问。
“是的，”维奥莱特说。
"Okay," said Arthur.
"You can come on the field trip.
Go get some glass jars with lids."
“好吧，”亚瑟说。
“你可以去野外旅行。
去拿些玻璃盖子盖上。”
Wilma and her big sister, Mabel, came down the road.
They had knapsacks and blanket rolls on their backs.
Wilma's knapsack had pots and pans tied to it.
Mabel's knapsack had water jugs tied to it.
"Where are you going with all that stuff?" asked Arthur.
"We're going on a camp-out," said Wilma.
威尔玛和她的姐姐梅贝尔走在路上。
他们背上有背包和毯子。
威尔玛的背包上挂着锅碗瓢盆。
梅布尔的背包上挂着水壶。
“你带着那玩意儿去哪儿？”亚瑟问。
