Small Wolf lived with his family in a village
on the banks of a river.
小狼和他的家人住在河边的一个村庄里。
His mother planted corn and did the cooking,
and his father did the hunting.
他的母亲种植玉米和做饭，他的父亲负责狩猎。
His father hunted deer and bears
and smaller things to eat.
What they didn't eat they made into clothes.
他父亲猎杀鹿、熊和小东西吃。
他们不吃的就做成衣服。
But Small Wolf was too small to go hunting.
All he could do was fish from his canoe.
He caught fish with a hook made of bone.
但是小狼太小了，不能去打猎。
他能做的就是用独木舟钓鱼。
他用骨头做的钩子钓鱼。
And he caught fish with a net of woven string.
He also caught eels
and dug for clams and oysters.
It was a good life, and he liked fishing.
他用编织绳做成的网去抓鱼。
他还捕到了鳗鱼，挖了蛤蜊和牡蛎。
这是一个美好的生活，他喜欢钓鱼。
But after a while he tired of catching fish.
He wanted to hunt for bigger things.
He asked his father to let him try.
“After all, ”he said,
“what can I lose?
An arrow or two,and that's all.”
“All right, ”his father said. "There is good
hunting on the Island of Hills, downriver.
Take your canoe, and spend a night and
a day there, and see what luck you have."
但过了一会儿，他厌倦了钓鱼。

and foxes and wolves and moose

He did not know that to be a man was
more than just shooting things.

There were other Indians
hunting and fishing on Manhattan,
but Small Wolf wanted to be alone.
So he pulled his canoe up on the bank and hi it,
and went into the forest.
还有其他印第安人在曼哈顿打猎和钓鱼，
但小狼想独处。
于是他把独木舟拉到岸上，
把它藏起来，进了森林。
When it got dark, Small Wolf made camp.
He made a shelter, and he made a fire.
He cooked a small bird he had shot.
And then he lay down.
天一黑，小狼就扎营了。
他造了个避难所，还生了火。
他烤了一只射击下来的小鸟，然后躺了下来。
But he did not go to sleep,
because the night was full of things.
It was full of sounds--
woo Hoo! Greeeeeeek! Owwwwwww!Snap! Crackle! Pop!
GRK-k-k-k-k-k! Grotch!
BliggerbliggerbliggerYOW!
And it was full of eyes.
但他没有去睡觉，因为晚上是充满了东西。
里面充满了声音：呼-呼！哦！啪！劈啪作响！爆裂声……
它充满了眼睛。
Small Wolf did not fall asleep until daylight.
小狼直到天亮才睡着。
When he woke up,
he saw a path through the woods.
"I think I'll follow this and see where it goes," he said.
“It may take me to where there is good game.”
So he said “Ya-hoo!”
a couple of times for good luck and set off,
ready for anything.
But he was not ready for what happened next.
He came out of the woods,
and he could not believe what he saw.
当他醒来时，他看到一条穿过树林的小径。
“我想我会跟着这条路，看看它的去向，”他说。
“它可能会带我去有好游戏的地方。”
所以他说“呀呼！”

He saw things he had never seen before-
houses with chimneys,
and ships with sails,
and a house with four arms that twirled around,
and a man whose face was all WHITE!

还有一个全是白脸的人！
The man had a fat jaw
and cracks between his teeth.
Small Wolf thought
the man was wearing
somedevil mask.
那人的下巴很胖，牙齿之间有裂痕。小狼认为那个人戴着什么魔鬼面具。
Off a ship
came odd animals.
船上出现了奇怪的动物。
There came horses
with long manes and tails.
There came cows
with short horns and black spots.There came sheep
with curled horns and black faces.There came pigs
with curled tails and stubby noses.And they were so big and strange,
and made such queer sounds:
WHNNNNNNNY! Moo! BAAAAAAA!
and OINK!
有长毛和尾巴的马来了。有短角黑斑点的牛，有卷曲的角和黑脸的羊，有卷曲尾巴和粗鼻子的猪，它们又大又怪，发出了奇怪的声音：“哇！穆奥！Baaaaaa！还有奥克！
Small Wolf was afraid.
I didnot come to hunt
this kind of thing, he said.
Theyare too much for me!
And he ran back into the woods.
小狼很害怕。我不是来打猎的，他说。他们对我来说太过分了！他跑回树林里。
He ran all the way back up the pathuntil he found his canoe,
and he paddled away from Manhattan
asfast as he could.
他一路跑回原路，直到找到独木舟，他尽可能快地划出曼哈顿。
When Small Wolf got home,
he told his father
what he had seen.
当小狼回到家时，他把他所看到的告诉了他的父亲。
I saw a man
all painted white! he said.
His hands and face were white,
and his jaws were fat,
and he had teeth like a medicine manor a devil!
I know about the white men,
said his father.
They came some time ago.Theyare all right,
if you leave them alone."

But then there were animals!said Small Wolf.
You never saw such animals!
Some have horns like this,
and some have horns like that,

and some have bushy tails,
and some have curly tails,
and they make noises
like WHNNNNNNY! MOo!
BAAA! and OINK!
you would not believe it
unless you saw it!
All right, said his father.That sounds interesting.
I’ll go and see.
Interesting? said Small Wolf.
It's terrifying! Just wait!
有的长着浓密的尾巴，有的有卷曲的尾巴，它们发出的声音就像“WNNNNNNNY”一样！穆奥！巴阿！还有奥克！除非你看到了，否则你不会相信的！好吧，他的父亲说，这听起来很有趣。我去看看。有意思的，有趣的小狼说。太可怕了！等等！
So they took the canoe
and went back to Manhattan.
于是他们乘独木舟回到曼哈顿。
There!" said Small Wolf
when they reached the town.
There are the animals!
Did you ever see anything like them?They are odd," his father agreed.
Let's ask someone
and see what we can find out."

So they went to a white man,
who looked startled to see them.He raised his gunand held it ready.
What are those animals for?"
Small Wolf's father asked.
They are for the farms,'
said the white man.
And you'd better get along.

This land is ours now,
We paid for it.

or the sea?

We paid the Indians
who were here,
the white man said.
They werefishing in the pond.
Now, get going or Ill shoot.He pointed his gun,
and cocked it with a small CLICK.

said Small Wolf's father.
We were only asking.
I said get going,
said the white man.

So Small Wolf and his father left.What Indians did he pay?
Small Wolf asked
as they paddled away.
The Caanarsees,," said his father,
and they did not even live there.

They had no right to sell the land.
The land and the sky and the sea
are all Mother Earth
for everyone tO use.

But the white men
did not see it that way.
They put up more houses
and spread out up the island.
但白人并没有这么想。他们建了更多的房子，把岛分散开来。
Their animals went everywhere,
and ate the crops
the Indians had planted,
and trampled on the Indians fields.
他们的牲畜到处跑，吃了印第安人种的庄稼，践踏了印第安人的田地。
Finally
there were more white men
and their animals
than Indians.
The animals
that the Indians had hunted
were gone.
最后，白人和他们的动物比印第安人还多。印第安人猎杀的动物都不见了。
The Indians had a hard time
growing any crops, a
and they were hungry.
印第安人很难种庄稼，他们饿了。
One day Small Wolf's father made a decision.
"I shall go and see the leader of the white men," he said.
I shall tell him he is spoiling the land,
and I shall ask him please to stop.
There is no reason to destroy the land like this.
May I come too? Small Wolf asked.
一天，小狼的父亲做出了一个决定。“我要去见白人领袖，”他说。我要告诉他，他正在破坏土地，我将请他停止。没有理由这样摧毁这块土地。我也可以来吗？小狼问。
Yes,
i said his father.
It is for your good I am asking.

So they set off
to find the leader of the white men.Before they had gone very far,
they heard shouts
and saw men running,
and then there was a BANG!
and something went THUNK!
into a tree behind Small Wolf.
In the distance
they heard men shouting,Indians! Indians!
于是，他们出发去找白人的首领。在他们走得很远之前，他们听到了喊叫声，看见有人跑来跑去，然后就有一声巨响！有东西砰的一声响了！变成小狼后面的一棵树。在远处，他们听到人们在喊叫，印第安人！印第安人！
Hey!" said Small Wolf.What is this all about?"
“嘿！”小狼说，“这是怎么回事？”
I don't know, his father said.
Stand still and listen.They listened,
and they heard more shouts.
Then came another BANG!
and a piece of bark
flew off a tree nearby.They re shooting at us!Small Wolf cried.
“我不知道，”他父亲说。站着听着，他们听着，听到了更多的喊叫声。接着又来了一声巨响！一片树皮从附近的一棵树上飞了下来，他们朝我们开枪！小狼叫道。
He ducked behind a tree,
and his father did the same.
It looks that way,
his father agreed.
But that makes no sense."
He raised a hand to his mouth
and called,
We want to talk!
Will your leader come
and talk with us?"
他躲在一棵树后面，他的父亲也是这样做的。看起来是这样，他父亲同意了。但这是没有道理的。“他举起一只手对着嘴说：”我们想谈谈！你们的领导人会来和我们谈话吗？“
Get out of here, you Indians!
a voice shouted from the woods.
Get back where you belong!

And a third shot rang out,
and a bullet snarled
past Small Wolf's ear.
I guess," his father said,they don't want to talk.We might as well go back.
第三枪响了起来，一颗子弹从小狼的耳边呼啸而过。“我想，”他父亲说，“他们不想说话，我们还是回去吧。”
They went back,
and the next day his father
made another decision.
There is plenty of land for all, he said.
If we cant live here,thenwe will just go
farther up the river.

If we go far enough, a
they will never reach us."So they packed their goods
and started off
to find a place
where the white men would not come.

They found a place
and settled down.

Then one day,
when Small Wolf was hunting,he thought he saw a deer.
He got closer
and aimed his arrow.
Then he saw
it was not a deer.
It was a cow!
然后有一天，当小狼在打猎时，他以为他看到了一只鹿。他走近了，瞄准了他的箭。然后他发现那不是鹿。是一头牛！
He went home
and told his father.
That meansthey are here,"
his father said.
他回家告诉他父亲。如果这意味着他们在这里，“他的父亲说。
We might as well move now,
before there is any trouble."
So off they went again.

And again.
And again.
And again.
