Big Max was the worlds greatest detective. Everyone knew it.
大家都知道大麦克斯是世界上最伟大的侦探。
The King of Pooka Pooka knew it.
He called Big Max on the telephone.
“Come quickly,” he cried.
“Someone has stolen Jumbo,my prize elephant.”
普卡的国王也知道这一点。
他打电话给大麦克斯。
“快来，”他叫道，
“有人偷了我心爱的大象Jumbo。”
“Do not worry,” said Big Max.
“I will be right there.I will find him for you.”
“ Will you come by plane or boat?”
the King asked.
“By umbrella,” Big Max said.

Big Max took a deep breath.
He blew into his umbrella.
The umbrella filled with air.
Big Max flew through the sky.

On the way he met some birds.
“We are flying south for the winter,”said the birds.
“What are you doing?”
“I am looking for a missing elephant,”Big Max said.
“You won't find him up here,”said one of the birds.
“But feel free to look around.”
“Thank you,” said IBig Max.
在路上，他遇到了一些鸟。
“我们正飞往南方过冬”，鸟儿们说。
“你在干什么？”
“我在找一只失踪的大象，”大麦克斯说。
“你在上面找不到他，”其中一只鸟说，
“但你可以四处看看。”
“谢谢，”大麦克斯说。
They flew over a ship.
“I smell something burning,” said Big Max.
“Sorry we can't help you.
Birds can't smell, ” said the birds.
他们飞过一艘船。

“对不起，我们帮不了你，
鸟儿闻不到，”鸟儿们说。
Big Max flew down to the ship.
He spoke to the Captain.
“Pardon me, ”Big Max said.
“I smell something burning.”
The Captain laughed.
“Ha, ha,” he said.
"That is the smoke from the smokestacks."
大麦克斯飞下船去了。
他和船长沟通了 。
“对不起，”大麦克斯说，
“我闻到什么东西烧着了。”
船长笑了。“哈哈，”
他说，“那是烟囱里的烟。”
“This smoke is coming from your pocket,”
Big Max said.
“My pipe! ”cried the Captain.
He took it out of his pocket.
"I forgot it was still lit.
You are a great detective."
“I try to be, ”said Big Max.
“这烟是从你的口袋里冒出来的，”大麦克斯说。
“我的烟斗！”船长喊道。
他从口袋里拿了出来。
“我忘了它还亮着，你是个伟大的侦探。”
“我尽力，”大麦克斯说。
Big Max flew on.
It began to rain.
“It's a good thing I travel by umbrella, ”Big Max said.
When he came to Pooka Pooka,
Big Max flew down.
The King was waiting for him.
“That is a great way to travel,” the King said.
"It got me here,"said Big Max.
大麦克斯继续飞。天开始下雨了。
“我乘伞旅行是件好事，”大麦克斯说。
当他来到普卡时，大麦克斯飞了下来。
国王正在等他。
“这是一个很好的旅行方式，”国王说。
“它把我带到了这里，”大麦克斯说。
The King led Big Max to the palace.
“I will give you anything I have
if you will find Jumbo, ” he said.
“I will find him,” said Big Max.
The King showed Big Max a room full of rubies.
He showed him a room full of emeralds.
He showed him a room full of gold.
“Do you charge a lot?” asked the King.
“Not that much,” said Big Max.
国王领着大麦克斯去了皇宫。
“如果你能找到Jumbo，
我会给你我所有的东西，”他说。
“我会找到他的，”大麦克斯说。
国王给大麦克斯看了一间装满红宝石的房间。
他给他看了一间满是绿宝石的房间。
他给他看了一间装满黄金的房间。
“你要价很高吗？”国王问。
“没那么多，”大麦克斯说。
“Who would want to steal Jumbo?” asked Big Max.
“Everybody,”said the King,
“because Jumbo is the best elephant in the world.”
“How old is Jumbo?” Big Max asked.
“He will be four years old tomorrow,” said theKing.
“Ah! ”said Big Max.
“Is that a clue? ”asked the King.
“We shall see, ”said Big Max.
“Was Jumbo happy here?” asked Big Max.
“谁会想要偷Jumbo呢？”大麦克斯问道。
“每个人，”国王说，
“因为Jumbo是世界上最好的大象。”
“Jumbo多大了？”大麦克斯问道。
“他明天就要四岁了，”国王说。
“啊！”大麦克斯说。
”这是条线索吗？“国王问道。
”我们会看到的，“大麦克斯说。
”Jumbo在这里开心吗？“大麦克斯”问。
“He was very happy, ”said the King.
“Until a week ago.”
“What happened then?” asked Big Max.
“He became sad, ”said the King.
“他很快乐，”国王说，“直到一周前。”
“发生了什么事？”大麦克斯问。
“他变得很伤心，”国王说。
“It is the first time he has been sad since I got him,”
the King said.
“When did you get him?” asked Big Max.
“Almost a year ago,” said the King.
“ Take me to where you last saw Jumbo, ”
said Big Max.
The King led him outside.
He opened a lock on the gate.
“Here, ”he said.
“In this courtyard.”
“这是自从我得到他以来，
他第一次感到悲伤，”国王说。

“差不多一年前，”国王说。
“带我去你最后一次见到Jumbo的地方，”大麦克斯说。

Big Max looked all around.
He looked up at the high walls.
“Elephants cannot climb walls,” said Big Max.
Big Max looked at the gate.
“Was the gate locked?” he asked.
“Yes,”said the King.
“And I have the only key.”
“Hmm, ”Big Max said.
“Elephants cannot open locks.”
大麦克斯环顾四周。
他抬头望着高高的墙壁。
“大象不肯能爬墙，”大麦克斯说。
大麦克斯看着大门。
“门之前都是锁着的吗？”他问。
“是的，我有唯一的钥匙。”国王说。
“嗯，”大麦克斯说。“大象不能打开锁。”
Big Max looked at the ground.
“Jumbo was not stolen!” he said.
“How do you know?” asked the King.
“There are no footprints except Jumbo's, ” said Big Max.
“Then how did he get out?” asked the King.
“We shall see, ” said Big Max.
大麦克斯看了看地上。
“Jumbo不是被偷走的！”他说。
“你怎么知道的？”国王问道。
“除了Jumbo的脚印，没有其他脚印，”大麦克斯说。
“那他是怎么出来的？”国王问道。
“我们等着瞧吧，”大麦克斯说。
“I see a clue, ” said Big Max.
“The ground is wet. Did it rain?”
“It always rains in Pooka Pooka,” said the King.
“Perhaps you are not
such a great detective after all.”
“We shall see, ” said Big Max.
“我看到一条线索了，”大麦克斯说，
“地面是湿的。下雨了吗？”
“普卡总是下雨，”国王说，
“也许你毕竟不是个伟大的侦探，”
“我们等着瞧吧，”大麦克斯说。
It was very hot.
Big Max sat down to think.
“What a wonderful idea,” he said.
“An ice chair for hot days.”
“Jumbo likes to sit on ice too,” said the King.
“That is why I always have so much ice here.”
"I do not see much ice," said Big Max.
"Only little pieces."
Big Max looked down.
He was sitting on the ground.
"This ice melts very fast," Big Max said.
天气很热，大麦克斯坐下来想了想，
他说，“真是个好主意。”
“在炎热的日子里放一张冰椅。”
“Jumbo巨人也喜欢坐在冰上，”国王说，
“这就是为什么我这里总有这么多冰。”
“我没看到多少冰，只有些许几块。”大麦克斯说。
大麦克斯低头看了看，他坐在地上。
“这种冰融化得很快，”大麦克斯说。
“What is on the other side of the wall?” he asked.
“A high hill,” said the King.
“Ha!” said Big Max.
“Now I know how Jumbo did it.
We must look outside the wall, ”
Big Max said. “Hurry!”
They hurried outside the wall.
They hurried down the hill.
“墙的另一边是什么？”他问。
“一座高山，”国王说。
“哈！”大麦克斯说。
“现在我知道Jumbo是怎么做到的了。
我们必须向墙外看，”
大麦克斯说，“快点！”
他们急忙跑到墙外，匆匆下山。
“Ha! ”said Big Max.
“I was right. Look. Here are tracks.”
“You are right,” said the King.
“These could be Jumbo's tracks, ” said Big Max.
“We must follow them.”
They followed the tracks.
“If we find out where Jumbo went,”
said Big Max, “we may find out why he went.”
“I see,” said the King.
“哈！”大麦克斯说，
“我是对的。看这是脚印。”
“你说得对，”国王说。
“这些可能是Jumbo的足迹，”大麦克斯说。
“我们必须跟着他们。”
他们跟着足迹走。
“如果我们知道Jumbo去了哪里，”大麦克斯说，
“我们就会知道他为什么走了。”
“我明白了，”国王说。
“Ha! ”said Big Max.
“I see another clue. I see tears.”
The King looked at the clue.
“I do not know why
Jumbo was so unhappy,” he said.
“We shall see,” said Big Max.
“ 哈！”大麦克斯说。
“我看到了另一条线索，我看见眼泪。”
国王看了看线索。
“我不知道为什么Jumbo这么不高兴，”他说。
“我们会弄明白的，”大麦克斯说。
“If we know why Jumbo went,”said Big Max,
“then we will know where he went.”
“I see,” said the King.
“You are a great detective.”
“Look and think, ”said Big Max.
“That is the secret.”
They followed the trail of the tracks.
They followed the trail of the tears.
They walked all night.
They walked all the next day.
The trail went uphill.
They followed it.
Suddenly Big Max stopped.
“如果我们知道Jumbo为什么走，”大麦克斯说，
“那我们就知道他去哪儿了。”
“我明白了，”国王说，“你是个伟大的侦探。”
“仔细看并思考，”大麦克斯说。
“这就是我的秘密。”
他们追随着足迹。
他们追随着泪水的痕迹。
他们走了一整晚。
第二天他们走了整整一天。

他们跟着足迹走。
突然，大麦克斯停了下来。
“Wait,” Big Max said.
“Something is wrong.
We are following the wrong trail. Hurry!”
They went down the hill.
They hurried.
Then they heard a loud sound.
"AAAAAAARGH !"
“等等，”大麦克斯说，
“有些地方不对劲。我们走错路了，快！”
他们匆匆忙忙下山了。
然后他们听到一个响亮的声音。“啊！”
“What was that?” asked the King.
“Well,” said Big Max.
“Let us think.
It was not an elephant.
Elephants do not sound like that.
They do not say AAAAAAARGH!”
“那是什么？”国王问。
“嗯，”大麦克斯说。
“让我们想想，那不是大象。
大象听起来可不是那样的，他们不会说‘啊！’”
Big Max said, “Just as I thought.
These are not elephant tears.
These are crocodile tears.
They are bigger than elephant tears.”
大麦克斯说，“就像我想的那样。
这些不是大象的眼泪，这些是鳄鱼的眼泪，
它们比大象的眼泪还要大。”
“Let us think,” said Big Max.
"This path has long sharp white teeth.
It has a long red tongue.
It has crocodile tears instead of elephant tears.
So it must be a crocodile."
“让我们想想，”大麦克斯说，
“这条路有长长的锋利的白色牙齿。
它有一条长长的红舌头。
它有鳄鱼的眼泪，而不是大象的眼泪。
所以，它一定是一条鳄鱼。”
Big Max turned around.
“I was right. It is a crocodile,”
said Big Max. “See for yourself.”
“I take your word for it,” said the King.
“It is a good thing I came by umbrella, ” Big Max said.
“He cannot bite now.”
大麦克斯转过身来。
“我是对的，这是条鳄鱼，”大麦克斯说，
“你自己看看。”
“我相信你的话，”国王说。
“我乘坐伞来的真是太棒了，”大麦克斯说，
“他现在不能咬人了。”
Big Max pushed the crocodile into the water.
Then he took out his umbrella.
"You nearly fooled me with that wrong clue,"
he said to the crocodile.
“I'm so sorry,” the crocodile said.
A big tear rolled out of his eye.
大麦克斯把鳄鱼推到水里。
然后他收回他的伞。
“你差点用那个错误的线索愚弄了我。”
他对鳄鱼说。
“我很抱歉，”鳄鱼说。
一大滴眼泪从他的眼睛里滚了出来。
“Look, he is crying,” said the King.
“That means he is sorry.”
“A crocodile's tears can fool you,” said Big Max.
He is crying because he did not have us for dinner.
“Don't remind me, ”said the crocodile.
He cried some more.
“看，他在哭，”国王说，“这意味着他很抱歉。”
“鳄鱼的眼泪能骗过你，”大麦克斯说，
“他哭是因为他没有捉到我们当晚饭。”
“别提醒我，”鳄鱼说。
他哭得更厉害了。
Big Max and the King went back to the right trail.
They walked through the jungle.
They heard a lot of noise.
The noise got louder.
大麦克斯和国王回到了正确的小径。
他们穿过丛林。
他们听到很多噪音，噪音越来越大。
The ground shook.
The trees shook.
Big Max and the King of Pooka Pooka shook.
“We must turn back,” said the King.
“It is an earthquake.”
地面震动，树木摇曳。
大麦克斯和普卡的国王摇摇晃晃的。
“我们必须回去，”国王说。“这是地震。”
“No, ”said Big Max.
“It is not anearthquake. It is a party.”
“A party?” asked theKing.
“An elephant party,” said Big Max.
He pointed through the trees.
“Look,” Big Max said.
There were a lot of elephants.
They were dancing.
They danced so hard the ground shook.
“不，”大麦克斯说，
“这不是地震。这是个聚会。”
“一个聚会？”国王问道。
“大象派对，”大麦克斯说。
他指着那棵树。“看，”大麦克斯说。
那里有很多大象，他们在跳舞，
他们跳得太猛了，地面都震动了。
“ There is Jumbo,” said the King.
"I see him. He is dancing too."
Big Max smiled.
“Another case solved, ”he said.
国王说：“是Jumbo，我看见他了，他也在跳舞。”
大麦克斯笑了。
“又一个案子解决了。”他说。
“It is a birthday party for Jumbo,” said Big Max.
“That is why he went away.
To spend his birthday with his family.”
The King ran to Jumbo.
“Happy birthday, Jumbo,” he said.
“How did you find me?” asked Jumbo.
"Ask Big Max, " said theKing.
“这是Jumbo的生日聚会，”大麦克斯说，
“这就是他离开的原因。他和家人一起过生日。”
国王跑向Jumbo。“生日快乐，Jumbo，”他说。
“你怎么找到我的？”Jumbo问。
“问大麦克斯，”国王说。
“We followed your trail to find out
where you went and to find out why you went,”
said Big Max. “I would still like to know how he went,” said the King.
“我们跟踪你的足迹，找出你去了哪里，
并找出你去的原因，”大麦克斯说。
“我还是想知道他是怎么走的，”国王说。
“It was the ice,” said Big Max.
“Jumbo took the cakes of ice.
He put one on top of another.
He made steps out of them.
He fooled me at first,
because there were no steps to see.
Only some melting ice.”
“是冰，”大麦克斯说。
“Jumbo拿起了冰蛋糕。
他把一块冰放在另一块上面。
他从上面走出去的。
他先是愚弄了我，因为没有看到的脚印，
只有融化的冰。”
"Jumbo walked up the steps of ice.
He walked to the top of the wall.
Behind the wall was a high hill.
He walked over the wall.
He walked down the hill."
"Yes," said Jumbo. "That is how."
Jumbo走上了冰块台阶。
他走到了墙的顶端。
墙后面是一座高山。
他越过了墙，从山上走了下来。
“是的，就是这样。”Jumbo说。
“Now I know how you went.
Now I know where you went.
Now I know why you went,” the King said.
“I did not know a birthday party was so important.”
"It is for elephants," said Big Max.
“Elephants like to be together.
Especially onbirthdays.”
“现在我知道你怎么出去的了，
现在我知道你去哪了，
现在我知道你为什么出去了，”国王说。
“我不知道生日聚会这么重要。”
“这是给大象独有的。”大麦克斯说。
“大象喜欢在一起，特别是在生日那天。”
“I am sorry I did not know,”
said the King of Pooka Pooka.
“Next year I will invite all your family
to a birthday party at the palace.
That way we can all be together.”
“对不起，我不知道，”普卡国王说。
“明年我将邀请你们全家到皇宫参加生日聚会。
这样我们就能在一起了。”
“You are a very great detective,”
the King said to Big Max.
"You can have any of my treasures
as a reward for finding Jumbo.
If you don't mind," said Big Max,
"I would rather have
a piece of Jumbo's birthday cake."
"I don't mind," said the King.
“你是个很棒的侦探，”国王对大麦克斯说，
“你可以得到我的任何一笔宝物，
作为你找到Jumbo的报酬。”
“如果你不介意的话，”大麦克斯说，
“我更愿吃一小块Jumbo的生日蛋糕，”
“我不介意，”国王说。
Jumbo gave Big Max and the King pieces of cake.
“My, what good cake,” the King said.
Then he ate another piece.
And then one more.
“Don't eat too much, ” said Jumbo.
“Or I won't be able to carry you
back to Pooka Pooka.”
The King stopped eating cake.
"Happy birthday, Jumbo, " he said.
"Happy birthday, Jumbo," said Jumbo's family.
Jumbo给了大麦克斯和国王一块蛋糕。
国王说，“我的蛋糕真好吃。”
然后他又吃了一片，然后再吃一片。
Jumbo说，“不要吃太多，
否则我就不能把你带回普卡了。”
国王不再吃蛋糕了。
“生日快乐，Jumbo，”他说。
“生日快乐，Jumbo，”Jumbo的家人说。
“Happy birthday, Jumbo,” said Big Max.
He took a deep breath.
He blew into his umbrella.
“And good-bye,” said Big Max,
the greatest detective in the world.
“生日快乐，Jumbo，”大麦克斯说。
他深吸了一口气，吹进雨伞。
“再见，”世界上最伟大的侦探大麦克斯说。
