"Papa, we are all in bed now," said the mouse boys.
"Please tell us a tale."
"I will do better than that," said Papa.
"I will tell you seven tales, one for each of you,
if you promise to go right to sleep when I am done."
"Oh yes, we will," said the boys.
And Papa began...
“爸爸，我们现在都在床上，”老鼠男孩说，
“请给我们讲个故事。”
“我会做得更好的，”爸爸说，
“我会给你们讲七个故事，每个人一个，
只要你们答应我完事后马上睡觉。”
”哦，是的，我们会的，“孩子们说。
爸爸开始说了……
The Wishing Well
许愿井
A mouse once found a wishing well.
"Now all of my wishes can come true!" she cried.
一只老鼠曾经找到一个许愿井。
“现在我所有的愿望都可以实现了！”她叫道。
She threw a penny into the well and made a wish.
"OUCH!" said the wishing well.
她把一分钱扔进井里，许了个愿。
“哎哟！”许愿井说。
The next day the mouse came back to the well.
She threw a penny into the well and made a wish.
"OUCH!" said the well.
第二天，老鼠回到井边，
她把一分钱扔进井里，许了个愿。
“哎哟！”井说。
The next day the mouse came back again.
She threw a penny into the well.
"I wish this well would not say ouch," she said.
"OUCH!" said the well. "That hurts!"
第二天老鼠又回来了，她往井里扔了一分钱。
“我希望这井不会说哎哟，”她说，
“哎哟！”井说。“好痛！”
"What shall I do?" cried the mouse.
"My wishes will never ever come true this way!"
“我该怎么办？”老鼠叫道。
“我的愿望永远不会以这种方式实现！”
The mouse ran home.
She took the pillow from her bed.
"This may help," said the mouse,
and she ran back to the well.
The mouse threw the pillow into the well.
Then she threw a penny into the well and made a wish.
老鼠跑回家了。她从床上拿起枕头。
“这可能有帮助，”老鼠说。
她跑回井边，老鼠把枕头扔进井里，
然后她把一分钱扔进井里，许了个愿。
"Ah. That feels much better!" said the well.
"Good!" said the mouse. "Now I can start wishing."
After that day the mouse made many wishes by the well.
And every one of them came true.
“啊。“感觉好多了！”井说。
“很好！”老鼠说。“现在我可以开始许愿了。”
那天之后，老鼠在井旁许下了许多愿望，
每一个愿望都成真了。
Clouds
云
A little mouse went for a walk with his mother.
They went to the top of a hill and looked at the sky.
一只小老鼠和他妈妈去散步。
他们走到山顶，望着天空。
"Look!" said Mother.
"We can see pictures in the clouds."
The little mouse and his mother
saw many pictures in the clouds.
They saw a castle... a rabbit... a mouse.
“哎呀！”母亲说。“我们可以在云中看到图案。”
小老鼠和他的妈妈在云中看到了许多图案，
他们看到了一座城堡、一只兔子、一只老鼠。
"I am going to pick flowers," said Mother.
"I will stay here and watch the clouds,"
said the little mouse.
“我要采花，”母亲说。
“我要呆在这里看云，”小老鼠说。
The little mouse saw a big cloud in the sky.
It grew bigger and bigger.
小老鼠看见天上有一大朵云，
它越来越大了。
The cloud became a cat.
The cat came nearer and nearer to the little mouse.
"Help!" shouted the little mouse, and he ran to his mother.
云层变成了一只猫。猫离小老鼠越来越近了。
“救命！”小老鼠叫道，他跑向他的妈妈。
"There is a big cat in the sky!" cried the little mouse.
"I am afraid!"
Mother looked up at the sky.
"Do not be afraid," she said.
"See, the cat has turned back into a cloud again."
“天上有一只大猫！我害怕！！”小老鼠喊道。
妈妈抬头望着天空。“不要害怕，”她说，
“瞧，猫又变成云彩了。”
The little mouse saw that this was true,
and he felt better.
He helped his mother pick flowers,
but he did not look up at the sky
for the rest of the afternoon.
小老鼠看到这是真的，他感觉好多了。
他帮妈妈摘花，
但下午剩下的时间他都不敢仰望天空。
Very Tall Mouse and Very Short Mouse
非常高的老鼠和很矮的老鼠
Once there was a very tall mouse and a very
short mouse who were good friends.
When they met Very Tall Mouse would say,
"Hello, Very Short Mouse."
And Very Short Mouse would say,
"Hello, Very Tall Mouse."
曾经有一只非常高的老鼠和一只很矮的老鼠是好朋友。
当他们见面的时候，非常高的老鼠会说：“你好，很矮的老鼠。”
非常矮的老鼠会说：“你好，很高的老鼠。”
The two friends would often take walks together.
As they walked along Very Tall Mouse would say, "Hello birds."
And Very Short Mouse would say, "Hello bugs."
两位朋友经常一起散步。
当他们走在一起的时候，
非常高的老鼠会说：“你好，鸟儿们。”
非常矮的老鼠会说，“你好，虫子们。”
When they passed by a garden Very Tall Mouse
would say, "Hello flowers."
And Very Short Mouse would say, "Hello roots."
当他们经过一个花园时，
非常高的老鼠会说：“你好，花们。”
很短的老鼠会说，“你好，树根们。”
When they passed by a house Very Tall Mouse
would say, "Hello roof."
And Very Short Mouse would say, "Hello cellar."
当他们经过一所房子时，
非常高的老鼠会说：“你好，屋顶。”
非常短的老鼠会说，“你好，地窖。”
One day the two mice were caught in a storm.
Very Tall Mouse said, "Hello raindrops."
一天，两只老鼠被困在暴风雨中。
非常高的老鼠说：“你好，雨滴们。”
And Very Short Mouse said, "Hello puddles."
They ran indoors to get dry.
"Hello ceiling," said Very Tall Mouse.
"Hello floor," said Very Short Mouse.
Soon the storm was over.
The two friends ran to the window.
Very Tall Mouse held Very Short Mouse up to see.
很短的老鼠说：“你好，小水坑。”
他们跑到室内晾干。
“你好，天花板，”非常高的老鼠说。
“你好，地板，”很矮的老鼠说。
不一会暴风雨结束了。
两个朋友跑到窗前。
非常高的老鼠举着非常矮的老鼠朝上看。
"Hello rainbow!" they both said together.
“你好，彩虹！”他们俩一起说。
The Mouse and the Winds
老鼠和风
A mouse went out in his boat,
but there was no wind. The boat did not move.
"Wind!" shouted the mouse.
"Come down and blow my boat across the lake!"
"Here I am," said the west wind.
老鼠准备乘船出发，
但是没有风，船没有动。
“风！”老鼠喊道。
“下来把我的船吹到湖那边去！”
“我来了，”西风说。
The west wind blew and blew.
The mouse and the boat went up in the air...
and landed on the roof of a house.
"Wind!" shouted the mouse.
"Come down and blow my boat off this house!"
"Here I am," said the east wind.
西风吹啊吹。那只老鼠和那条船吹到了空中，
落在了一座房子的屋顶上。
“风！”老鼠喊道。
“下来，把我的船吹离这座房子！”
”我来了，“东风说。
The east wind blew and blew.
The mouse and the boat and the house
went up in the air...
and landed on the top of a tree.
东风吹啊吹。
老鼠、船和房子都吹到了空中，
最后落在了一棵树顶上。
"Wind!" shouted the mouse.
"Come down and blow my boat
off this house and off this tree!"
"Here I am," said the south wind.
The south wind blew and blew.
The mouse and the boat and the house
and the tree went up in the air...
and landed on the top of a mountain.
“风！”老鼠喊道。
“下来，把我的船吹离这座房子和这棵树！”
“我来了，”南风说，
南风吹啊吹，
老鼠、船、房子和树都吹到了空中，
然后降落在一座山顶上。
"Wind!" shouted the mouse.
"Come down and blow my boat off this house
and off this tree and off this mountain!"
"Here I am," said the north wind.
“风！”老鼠喊道。
“快下来，把我的船吹离这座房子，
从这棵树上，从这座山上下来！”
“我来了，”北风说。
The north wind blew and blew.
The mouse and the boat and the house and the tree
and the mountain went up in the air...
and came down into the lake.
北风吹啊吹，
把老鼠、船、房子、树和山吹到了空中，
然后掉进了湖里。
The mountain sank and became an island.
这座山沉没了，变成了一个孤岛。
The tree landed on the island and burst into bloom.
The house landed next to the tree.
A lady looked out of a window in the house and said,
"What a nice place to live!"
树落在岛上，突然开花了，
房子落在树旁边。
一位女士从房子的窗户向外看了看，
说：“真是个好地方！”
And the mouse just sailed away.
老鼠就这样离开了。
The Journey
旅程
There was a mouse who wanted to visit his mother.
So he bought a car and started to
drive to his mother's house.
有只老鼠想去看望他的母亲。
于是他买了一辆车，准备开车去他母亲家。
He drove and drove and drove until the car fell apart.
But at the side of the road
there was a person selling roller skates.
他开啊开啊开，直到车散架。
但是在路边有一个卖**鞋的人。
So the mouse bought two roller skates and put them on.
He rolled and rolled and rolled until the wheels fell off.
But at the side of the road
there was a person who was selling boots.
So the mouse bought two boots and put them on.
于是老鼠买了两只**鞋，然后穿上。
他滑啊滑，滑啊滑，直到轮子掉了下来。
但是在路边有个卖靴子的人。
于是老鼠买了两只靴子穿上。
He tramped and tramped and tramped
until there were big holes in the boots.
But at the side of the road
there was a person who was selling sneakers.
So the mouse bought two sneakers.
他走啊走，走啊走，直到靴子上有个大洞，
但在路边上，有个人在卖运动鞋，
于是老鼠买了双运动鞋。
He put them on and ran and ran and ran
until the sneakers were all worn out.
他穿上鞋跑啊跑，跑啊跑，
直到运动鞋都穿破了。
So he took the sneakers off
and walked and walked and walked
until his feet hurt so much that he could not go on.
But at the side of the road
there was a person who was selling feet.
So the mouse took off his old feet
and put on new ones.
于是他把运动鞋脱了下来，
走啊走啊，走啊走啊，
一直走到脚疼得不能再走为止。
但是在路的边上有一个卖脚的人，
于是老鼠摘下他的旧脚，穿上了新的脚。
He ran the rest of the way to his mother's house.
When he got there his mother was glad to see him.
他一路跑到他母亲家。
当他到那里时，他母亲很高兴见到他。
She hugged him and kissed him, and she said,
"Hello, my son. You are looking fine
and what nice new feet you have!"
她拥抱着他，吻了吻他，说：
“你好，我的儿子。你看上去很好，
你的脚多漂亮啊！“
The Old Mouse
老老鼠
There was an old mouse who went for a walk every day.
The old mouse did not like children.
When he saw them on the street
he would shout, "Go away, horrid things!"
有一只年纪很大的老鼠每天都去散步，
他不喜欢孩子，当他在街上看到他们时，
他会喊：“走开，可怕的东西！”
One day the old mouse was taking his walk.
All at once, his suspenders broke,
and his pants fell down.
一天，一只老鼠在散步，
突然，他的吊带断了，裤子掉了下来。
Some ladies came by.
"Help, help!" cried the old mouse.
But the ladies screamed,
"Your pants have fallen down!"
And they ran away.
有几位女士经过。
“帮帮我，帮帮我！”老鼠喊道。
但是女士们尖叫着，“你的裤子掉下来了！”
于是他们就跑掉了。
The old mouse ran home and cried, "Help me!"
But his wife only said,
"You look silly in your underwear,"
and gave him a hit on the head.
The old mouse began to cry.
Some children passed by.
"Poor old mouse," they said,
"we will help you. Here is some chewing gum.
老老鼠跑回家喊道：“帮帮我！”
但他的妻子只说：“你穿内衣看起来很傻”，
打了他一拳，老鼠开始哭了。
几个孩子经过。“可怜的老鼠，”他们说，
“我们会帮你的，这是一些口香糖。”
It will hold your pants up very well."
"Look!" cried the old mouse .
"My pants are up! This chewing gum is great.
These pants will never fall down again!"
它会把你的裤子撑得很好。”
“快看！”老鼠叫道，“我的裤子好了！
这个口香糖真厉害。裤子再也不会掉下了！”
Those pants never did fall down again.
And after that, the old mouse was always
kind to children when he went for his walk.
那条裤子再也没掉下来过。
在那之后，老鼠在散步的时候总是对孩子们很好。
The Bath
洗澡
There was once a mouse who was dirty,
so he took a bath.
The water filled up the bathtub.
But the mouse was still dirty,
曾经有一只老鼠很脏，于是他洗了个澡，
水装满浴盆，但老鼠还是脏。
so he let the water run over onto the floor.
The water filled up the bathroom.
But the mouse was still dirty,
so he let the water run out of the window.
所以他让水流到地板上，
水灌满了浴室，但是老鼠还是很脏，
所以他让水从窗户里流出去。
The water filled up the street.
But the mouse was still dirty,
so he let the water run into the house next door.
The people in the house next door cried,
"Turn off the water! We have had our bath today!"
But the mouse was still dirty,
so he let the water run all over the whole town.
水沿着街道滚滚流过。但老鼠还是脏的，
所以他让水冲进隔壁的房子。
隔壁的人喊着：“把水关了！我们今天洗过澡了！”
但是老鼠还是很脏，所以他让水流过整个城镇。
The people in the town cried,
"Turn off the water! You are very clean now!"
The mouse said, "Yes, you are right.
I am clean now."
镇上的人喊着：“把水关了！你现在很干净！”
老鼠说：“是的，你是对的。我现在干净了！”
So he turned off the water.
By then the town was all wet.
But the mouse did not care.
He rubbed himself with a big towel until he was very dry.
于是他把水关了，这时全镇都湿透了，
但老鼠不在乎。
他用一条大毛巾擦了擦，直到很干为止。
And then he went right to sleep.
"Is anybody awake?" asked Papa.
然后他径直去睡觉了。
“有人醒了吗？”爸爸问。
There was no answer.
Seven small mice were snoring.
"Good night, my boys," said Papa,
"and sleep well.I will see you aíl in the morning."
没有人回答。
七只小老鼠在打鼾。
“晚安，我的孩子们，”爸爸说，
“睡得好。明天早上见。”
