Rainbows are seen in the sky opposite the sun and are caused by the refraction ( bending of light ) and dispersion ( splitting up ) of sunlight in drops of rain or mist.

% x+ [6 D- D q$ x& ~! Srefraction 就是 “折射”,light bends as it passes through a transparent material for example, glass, prisms, rain drops. 当光线通过透明物质的时候(比如:玻璃、三棱镜、或者雨滴),它就会弯曲。这就是折射,refraction。# R* ]6 y" \ T6 u( b+ L, W: l

Sunlight hitting the rain or mist is dispersed into its constituent colours this is because the light is reflected at varying angles, creating a rainbow because the different colours refract and bend by different amounts. Each colour of the rainbow has a different wavelength.
