There was once a little brown country mouse.
His name was Pipin.
He lived in a house in a hedge.
很久以前，有一只棕色的小老鼠，他的名字叫做Pipin。他生活在乡下，用树篱笆围起来的一个简易房子。
In spring, he lay in the grass and listened to the birds sing.
春天的时候，他最喜欢做的事情就是在草丛里用大片的树叶做成一张吊床，静静地听鸟儿歌唱。
In summer, he nibbled on wild strawberries and cut grass for his winter bed.
到了夏天，他最爱吃的野草莓就成熟了,他每天都会摘很多很多的野草莓，在自己的家里吃啊吃啊，哎呀，在Pipin看来，没有比这更惬意的生活了。
One day, as the weather grew colder and a chill wind blew, he heard a Tap! Tap! Tap! at his door.
一转眼间，天气就变得越来越冷了，寒风挂起来可是把人冻得不轻。他听到门外有“当当当”的敲门声。
“Pipin!”called a voice.“It's your cousin. I've come to stay!”
“Pipin！是我，我是你的表哥。我来看望你啦！”
Pipin flung open the door.
Pipin兴奋极了，他三步变作两步冲向了房门。他打开房门一看
“Toby Town Mouse!” he cried.“Come in!”
“呀，真的是你呀，Toby。你从城里来看我啦！快进来吧！”
Pipin made Toby a seat from soft, squashy moss.
Pipin热情的招待表哥Toby进屋休息。他用熟透了的苔藓给Toby做了一张椅子，坐上去柔软极了。
“It's too damp!”said Toby Town Mouse.
“哎呀，这椅子太潮湿了！”
Pipin took Toby on a walk.
But the flowers made him sneeze.
Pipin决定带着Toby到户外走走，不过外面的空气非常好，遍地还开满了鲜花，景色非常美。
“Smell the flowers.”
“快闻闻这些鲜花香不香！”
That night, Pipin went to his food store. He picked out his best nuts and berries.
到了晚上，该吃晚饭了。Pipin从自己的食物仓库里，精挑细选了他保存的最好的坚果和浆果。
“Urgh!”said Toby Twon Mouse.“I hate nuts!”
“Is that all you have? In town, we eat like kings.”
“啊呀，呸呸呸。我讨厌吃坚果。你每天就吃这个吗？在城里，我们吃的就像国王一样丰盛。”
“Really?”asked Pipin.
“是真的吗？”
“Come and see for yourself,”said Toby.
“The country is horrible. You'll never want to live here again.”
“你和我一起回到城里看一看你就知道。一对比你就会觉得，乡下的生活实在是太糟糕了，你肯定再也不想回来了。”
The next day, the cousins woke up dawn.“We‘ll take the train.” said Toby.
到了第二天，天刚亮，兄弟俩就起床了，Toby一边催促Pipin快点儿，一边说：“我们今天要去坐火车！”
They ran to the station.
他们飞奔向了火车站。
Soon, they heard the rattle tattle of pebbles, jumping on the railway line.
很快，他们就听到一阵咔哒咔哒的声音，原来是火车轨道只见的鹅卵石蹦到了铁轨上发车的声音。
“The train's coming.”cried Pipin.“It's huge!”
“火车来喽！这火车可真大啊！”
It came to a stop with a screech and a snort.
果然，火车缓缓的进站了，车轮和轨道之间的摩擦发出了刺耳的声音，同时呢，车头的烟囱上喷出了白色的蒸汽。
A door flew open.
“Jump!”said Toby.
这时候，车门突然打开了，Toby大喊一声：“快跳！”。
The train gave a shriek and a snort and it was off again.
火车又发出了一阵刺耳的尖叫声，紧接着车顶的烟囱又喷出了蒸汽，火车开动了，发出Chugga-chugga-chugga-chugga. Choo! Choo!的声音。
Pipin looked out of the window. He could see trees waving their branches.
他望向车窗外，看到路边的树都在不停地摇晃树枝，好像是在向他招手。
Then there were no trees at all---just tall buildings touching the sky.
不过走着走着，Pipin发现，车窗外再也看不到树了，全都变成了摩天大楼。
As the sky grew dark, the train stopped again.
到天黑的时候，火车又停了下来。
Toby twitched his whiskers. He sniffed the air.
Toby用手捋了捋胡须，用力吸了吸空气，他喜欢城里的气味。
“We're here!”he said.
“At last, I'm in town again. Home, sweet home.”
“Now, follow me!”
“我们到啦，太好了，我终于又回到了城里。Pipin你跟紧我，我们回家喽！”
They leaped onto the train platform.
“Be quick, Pipin!”he called. “Watch out for stamping feet.”
火车刚一停稳，Toby就飞快地蹦上了月台。他转过头对Pipin喊道：“快点儿Pipin！当心别被人们的脚踩到！”
The mice ran out of the station and onto a busy street.
他们从火车站跑了出来，来到了一条繁忙的大街上。
Pipin gasped.
There was so much noise.
The cars vroomed. Their horns beeped.
Pipin躲到一个垃圾桶后面，喘着粗气，他需要好好的适应一下这个全新的环境。这里有太多的噪声，汽车在大街上跑来跑去，发出呜呜的声音，哦对了，还有汽车喇叭声，哔哔的响个不停。
And the smells!
Pipin sniffed his first sausage and coughed on the smoke.
领Pipin不能适应的还有气味。他第一次闻到了香肠的味道，嗯，真香啊，不过紧接着，一辆汽车喷出的尾气把他呛得咳个不停。
