首先讲一个例子：朋友的孩子当时在加拿大上一年级，这之后开始被老师要求记一些单词，并且要求课堂上阅读的所有内容中，每当再次遇到这些单词之后，都要用荧光笔标出来，以加深印象。并且老师还给所有的家长发了通知，大意是：今年课堂上会学习一些“Sight Words”,要流利地阅读，快速提高阅读水平，必须要掌握这些Sight Words, 就是一些最常用、非常简单的大约220单词，包括 a, the, and, I, me 等。一年级结束后要求掌握大约120个，最好全部掌握。要求撇一眼就能认出、快速发音、理解词义，但并不要求完全正确地拼写出来。老师要求家长在和孩子阅读时，要有选择地让孩子读完后给家长指认那些在课堂上学习过的词。
家长们都会按照老师的提示，开始研究 Sight Words 是怎么回事。 Sight Words, 顾名思义，就是一入视觉就立即反应的词汇。sight words 指的是英语语言中的常见字，按照Dolch的统计，共有220个。这个数字（也包括词汇表）是在20世界40年代由美国学者E.W.Dolch针对英语儿童读物做的分析统计后整理出来的。他整理出来的220个词汇被分成5个等级。另外Dolch还列出了95个常见名词，来搭配220个sight words 学习。这些词汇对刚刚接触英语学习、并希望拓展阅读能力的低龄入门者是不可缺少的。,据说这些词汇占据了阅读词汇量的50%！有了这220词，阅读的文章中，你就有50%的单词都认识，配合适当难度等级的书进行阅读练习，就会极大地提高阅读速度以及流利性，并进而有助于对内容的理解。
在英美国家，专门有些精彩的儿童阅读书籍就是针对sight words编写的，在这样的阅读材料的引导下，更会使儿童的阅读能力和语言学习能力在有兴趣的阅读中不知不觉中被培养起来。我们所熟知的美国作家苏斯博士（Dr. Seuss),就是这样一位将sight words在写作中发挥到淋漓尽致地步的作家。比如，他的作品The Cat in the Hat中，简单的用词加上有趣的故事内容，使得读者只要具备识读sight words的能力，就能轻而易举地享受阅读的乐趣。
