鹅妈妈童谣(Mother Goose)讲的不是一只鹅的故事，也不是指某个人的名字。它是游吟诗人猶在林间漫步的时代，即已流传在英国各地的儿歌童谣的总称。这些通过口耳相传，已流行了两三百年的歌谣，除了应景应时的内容之外，也可以拿来表示开心、表示怜爱、描写人生或者表达愿望等。它内容典雅，有幽默故事、游戏歌曲、儿歌、催眠曲、字母歌、数数歌、绕口令、动物歌等，也有一些内容滑稽甚或不知所云的荒诞歌和逗趣的猜谜歌。
《鹅妈妈故事集（注音美绘本）》（贝洛童话）被誉为“世界童话文学链条的头一环”，是最早的为儿童所乐于接受的童话作品集。俄国杰出的作家屠格涅夫曾这样评价：“它是这样的趣味无穷，这样的使孩子迷恋，这样的使孩子大开眼界……它的那种奇幻神妙和平凡质朴、庄严崇高和活泼快乐的糅合，才是名副其实的童话构思区别于其他文学样式的特征。”
